Modular electrical rooms installed as part of UVA Hospital expansion
Corporate Announcement
M.C. Dean has completed the first phase of the University of Virginia (UVA) Hospital expansion. The expansion includes a new emergency department with a two-story entrance lobby, more than 80 examination/prep-post rooms made up of separate behavioral health, pediatric, and adult care departments, all powered by two company-provided substations.
As part of the first phase, M.C. Dean installed seven modular electrical rooms, each containing two separate normal and emergency components, for a total of 14 individual rooms fabricated in our Modular Mission Critical™ facility.
“Our industry-leading systems integration expertise and modular approach and capabilities have allowed us to successfully support UVA’s mission to provide excellence, innovation, and exceptional quality in the care of their patients,” said Mike Keatley, senior vice president of Electrical Systems. “As one of the chief trauma centers for central Virginia, having outgrown its existing infrastructure, this expansion is important for the region and the university.”
M.C. Dean’s overall scope of work included power, lighting, fire alarm, and low voltage pathways. As a design-assist partner, M.C. Dean provided design feedback from the schematic design milestone through construction to owner occupancy.
The second phase of the hospital expansion is now underway with the addition of the patient bed tower that rests atop the emergency department. As a leading educational hospital, UVA will add 24 specialty rooms in Summer 2019, including computed tomography, radiology, interventional radiology, cath labs, and operating rooms with the latest video integration systems. The bed tower will have 84 patient rooms with shell space to accommodate an additional 84.
Additionally, M.C. Dean has been contracted to provide engineering solutions on other projects in support of the university, such as Ivy Mountain Musculoskeletal Center. The university hospital expansion project is expected to be completed in Spring 2020 and the Musculoskeletal Center in late 2021.
