M.C. Dean electrical safety manager uses electrically safe, de-energized equipment for training and competency verification purposes.

M.C. Dean is expanding their Qualified Electrical Worker (QEW) program as an extension of their NFPA 70E electrical safety course. While the company has designated QEWs on all sites, they are investing in this more extensive hands-on training to bring the opportunity to more employees and enhance field team safety.

The newly expanded QEW program, which is now being implemented on a Central Virginia data center site, offers three levels of hands-on training, and can be followed by additional testing to become an Energy Marshal. The instruction is led by an Electrical Safety Manager. The instructor utilizes large-scale equipment onsite to enable more advanced learning in a real-world environment, with success tracked using live, online forms.

“This program was a collaborative effort between project teams, commissioning personnel, and safety professionals to enhance our workforce and add value to our employees,” said Aaron Schoemaker, M.C. Dean chief safety officer.

On project sites, QEWs and Energy Marshals oversee proper isolation and management of energy sources and adherence to Lockout/Tagout procedures.
