A Central Virginia project team was honored for their commitment to safety during an employee appreciation event.

M.C. Dean’s data center project in Central Virginia was recognized for hitting pause during medium voltage (MV) power switching operations, reinforcing safety procedures and ensuring project success.

The team conducted an operational risk management (ORM) assessment followed by a scripted dry run of this operation. During dry runs, the team discovered a sequencing issue, which would expose them to unnecessary risk. They paused work and escalated to site leadership. Revised procedures were reviewed and re-sequenced to eliminate risk without impacting schedule.

“I am incredibly proud of this team not only for having the courage to speak up and pause work, but for feeling comfortable enough to escalate potential safety issues directly to me,” said Chris Edge, M.C. Dean director of operations.

Bill Dean, M.C. Dean chief executive officer, and Mike Keatley, M.C. Dean senior vice president of Engineering & Construction, recognized the team’s outstanding performance at an all-hands event reinforcing our safety culture. M.C. Dean employees were treated to lunch, T-shirts, and a presentation celebrating this team and the project at large for continued success.

The event reinforces “Take Charge,” an M.C. Dean initiative providing two-way communication avenues for the company’s workforce to engage directly with leadership and provide valuable feedback. Employees are encouraged to take personal ownership, make safe observations, report safety hazards on the spot, and shift work activities to avoid risks.
