The American Council of Engineering Companies (ACEC) Virginia presented M.C. Dean a Grand Award for Engineering Excellence for the firm’s work on the National Museum of the United States Army. The Grand Award is the highest level recognition by ACEC regionally each year, given to projects that demonstrate an exceptional degree of innovation, creativity and social, economic, and environmental benefits.

Watch: Preserving History through Design Excellence

“It was a privilege for us to honor more than 245 years of Army history,” said Tim Shea, vice president of Engineering. “As the Electrical Engineer of Record, our modular design and manufacturing methods allowed us to showcase the museum’s unique artifacts while seamlessly integrating into the surrounding aesthetics.”

M.C. Dean’s design approach proves that modular projects can be as beautiful and sustainable as they are functional, with systems and pathways “hidden in plain sight” to maintain focus on the exhibits. The firm’s scope included the design and delivery of six electrical room modules (ERMs), fully integrated with modularly manufactured fire alarm and public safety telecommunications assemblies.

“Key Army artifacts, such as tanks and artillery, were put in place early during construction, but were liable to rust or rot if not kept in precise conditions. We requested M.C. Dean accelerate the delivery of power systems to maintain and preserve these historic artifacts,” said Darcy Brewer, senior project manager for the Army Historical Foundation. “Demonstrating agile responsiveness, their team was able to turn power on within one week of our request, months ahead of the original schedule.”
